The Four Seasons
11.12. 2016, 19:30 – The Hall of Mirrors, Primate´s Palace

In 1725 a collection of 12 concertos „Il cimento dell´armonia e dell´inventione“ (The Contest between Harmony and Invention), op. 8, was published and the first four bear the subtitle The Four Seasons. The title of the collection itself reveals the conflict between the art of composition (harmony) and improvisational abilities directly on stage (invention). In The Four Seasons, however, Vivaldi went further than improvisation on purely musical ideas. He wrote a detailed program describing the different seasons of the year into the score. This narrative element is captured by Italian sonnets, probably written by Vivaldi himself. These original texts with subtitles in seven languages (Italian, English, German, French, Russian, Spanish, and Slovak) will be shown simultaneously on the screen.
