St. Martin Days 2016

A wine tasting event. It’s about time to taste the young wine from this year and exactly this is the aim of St. Martin Days. Bratislavas wine makers will offer their youngest wines every day during the event between 12:00 and 22:00. A part of the event will also be the benediction of the young wine in the St. Luis chapel in Primatial Palace.

Wine has a 3000 years long tradition in Bratislava and the country around. The hills around have fertile ground are filled with sun, which are ideal conditions for the grapewine production. No wonder, that it was a most important wine production region within Slovakia, in the past favoured by the Queen Maria Theresia.

On Friday, November 11, 2016, the twelfth Lantern Parade will take place in the Bratislava Castle, organized by the German School in Bratislava. In Germany, it is a tradition to celebrate this day with children, their parents and teachers with songs and lantern parade. Children carry self-designed lanterns, sing songs and follow Saint Martin who is on horseback. The whole procession stops at the place, where the St. Martin’s Cathedral is the most visible, and a scene from the life of St. Martin is played: St. Martin sharing his coat with a freezing beggar. Children and adults sing the song of St. Martin and go back to school by night, where they can have a cup of tea, hot punch and other goodies. Children will share biscuits they baked – Martin’s “geese” in memory of St. Martin’s kindness. Everyone is heartily invited to join the parade together with your children. We are meeting at 05:00 p.m. at the main entrance to the Bratislava Castle.
