Jan Rybníček: Mezi námi

The exhibition presents Jan Rybníček’s latest works from 2023–2025, in which the author develops his long-standing fascination with intimacy, mystery, and the subtle barriers between people.

In his figurative compositions, he explores the relational and internal positions of humans, often through layering, structures, and empty spaces. It is precisely these „cutouts“ and „viewports“ that become the tools of a new composition, in which he simultaneously reveals and conceals.

The motif of curtains or drapes that appears in his works does not allow the viewer to see through completely—instead of a direct statement, there is tension, incompleteness, and a sense of barrier. In some works, the author uses a felt base, which evokes the soft, tapestry-like character of the surface and at the same time brings a new material layer to his painting language.

Rybníček’s work moves between reality and dream space – the characters and scenes remain open to various interpretations and can be as concrete as they are archetypal. This visual language, based on the alternation of the revealed and the hidden, allows the viewer to enter into an intimate dialogue that takes place „between us.“
