Tribute to Freedom

The event Tribute to Freedom, held on August 15 at Devín Castle, has been an integral part of cultural and social life in Bratislava since 2009, with an impact on the whole of Slovakia.

Its content is unique in Slovakia because, through its artistic program, it also commemorates the importance of freedom for the nation and for individuals, with a reminder of our nation’s modern history, which is linked to the struggle for freedom: the Slovak National Uprising, the occupation, and the Velvet Revolution. It is a connection between art and history.

The concert venue itself – Devín Castle – is one of the most impressive historical sites in Central Europe. This landmark is not only a symbol of the foundations of Slovak history, but its significance extends to the whole of Europe. In ancient times, it was home to the Celts, followed by the Romans, and since the 8th century, it has been one of the most important Slavic castles. After the end of World War II, the Iron Curtain ran directly beneath it.

Devín is a symbol of freedom for the entire country in this region and is gradually becoming an important historical and memorial site for all citizens of Slovakia. The 16th edition of the event is a dramatic celebration of the music scene that emerged in the 1980s as the „New Wave of Slovak Popular Music,“ represented by exceptional artists and groups.
