You can feel the artist’s admission that he is a printmaker at heart. The artistic language is recognizable at a glance. Thanks to it, M\u00e1tek’s world is perceived by young children and the oldest adults. Much of the credit for the author’s direction went to his teachers, at high school it was Milo\u0161 Kopt\u00e1k, at the academy it was Professor Du\u0161an K\u00e1llay. „They showed me the power of line, the secret of mixing and contrasting colours; the magic of drawing, graphics, illustration,“ he recalls. The road to the first book, however, was a long one. Although he studied illustration, he didn’t get the opportunity until years after college. Publishers were afraid of his illustrations. They thought they were scary.<\/p>\n
They weren’t cute little pink-cheeked princesses or cuddly mommies with soft hugs. So his first illustrated title is the gritty story Jaro kripl\u016f about disabled children on an adventure course where lives are on the line. The breakthrough, however, came with the children’s book The Airport Lapins. It was different, it was a success, it even won a prize in the The Most Beautiful Book of Slovakia competition. Since then, several titles illustrated by M\u00e1tko have been nominated in the competition. The book Presbyterian Legends Come to Life – a tribute to the work of the Slovak writer Maria \u010eur\u00ed\u010dkov\u00e1 – provoked a special response.<\/p>\n
Zatia\u013e poslednou je kultov\u00e1 kniha Georgea Orwella Zvieracia farma. Mat\u00fa\u0161 Ma\u0165\u00e1tko sa venuje aj vo\u013en\u00e9mu umeniu a jeho diela sa pova\u017euj\u00fa za koment\u00e1re s\u00fa\u010dasn\u00e9ho diania. Medzi ned\u00e1vne v\u00fdstavn\u00e9 projekty patria: \u010cas kostlivcov: Biela-Modr\u00e1-\u010cerven\u00e1 Epopej, Cuprum Civitas a Zodiak. S\u00fa\u010das\u0165ou umeleck\u00e9ho prejavu autora s\u00fa aj realiz\u00e1cie vo verejnom priestore. Najzn\u00e1mej\u0161\u00ed mur\u00e1l je v Bratislave na Mari\u00e1nskej ulici, dielo Anjeli m\u00e1 v\u00fd\u0161ku 17 metrov. Zatia\u013e posledn\u00fd mur\u00e1l Ruka mieru vytvoril spolo\u010dne s Filipom Sabolom na Mahane Jehuda markete, najv\u00e4\u010d\u0161om trhovisku v Jeruzaleme.
