Ligeti, in good company
Before Ligeti, densely layered musical elements created a homogeneous sound, but after Ligeti, sound, often as a mass of sound, becomes an atomic element of music, its texture being oversaturated in various ways.
In search of a compositional method that would provide texture for the cobweb-like masses of sound, Ligeti developed the technique of micropolyphony in harmony with Renaissance polyphony by taking Ockeghem as a model, adopting his principle of “varietas”, where voices are similar without of becoming identical.
Our concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of György Ligeti’s birth is an exciting dive into Ligeti’s music and other compositions related to his music.
The Central European Chamber Orchestra MIKAMO was founded in 2007 by former graduates of the Vienna Academy of Music. The orchestra perceives its concerts as a Gesamtkunstwerk and, in cooperation with contemporary composers, develops the entire Central European musical tradition of the 20th century, as well as the historical repertoire of contemporary music. MIKAMO realizes unique and recurring concerts in important concert halls in Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and throughout Central Europe.
At this MIKAMO concert, Quasars Ensemble from Bratislava is the guest group. The ensemble was founded in 2008 and is unique in the breadth of its repertoire, which includes contemporary classical music as well as music from past periods. The ensemble confronts the latest contemporary works with the structural principles of contemporary classical music and focuses on presenting rare and forgotten ensemble compositions, mainly by Slovak composers.
