In the year 1865 the strong passion for Josefína Čermáková lead the young Antonín Dvořák to the creation of eighteen songs arranged in the cycle Cypresses. In future Dvořák returned more often to his diary of love and used the song material also in other contexts. From this point of view the most concentrated version is the one for the string quartet. As a doyen Dvořák spend the moments of creative relax on a detailed revision of his juvenile opuses. Also the immature Piano Quintet in A major, Op. 5 did not escape his attention. Instead of revising the piece, he rather wrote a new title in the same key – and this is already a piece by a great master.
