You can also enjoy this Shakespeare’s classic during the Summer Shakespeare Festival at the Bratislava Castle. Although it is one of the author’s first plays, he has fully demonstrated his comedic and poetic talent.
Although the play has a classic plot in the construction of a dramatic text, it offers various possibilities in the processing of the work to the creators. You can feel the echoes of commedia dell’arte, which was known for its strong acting craftsmanship and the director strengthened this aspect when staging the text.
In addition to acting, each actor was also proficient in other artistic professions that came out of the theatre and now exist as separate stage forms. Singing that could not be missed in any production, clown solo performances equal to today’s stand up comedy or acrobatic performances – today a very recognized modern, circus form of theatre.
And it is all these requirements that are reflected in the cast of this performance. Kostelný, a perfect stand up showman. Kovaľ, Kráľ and Matonoha – great musicians, Norisová and Švidranová – great singers, Sakálová – lover of yoga and dance, Grega – a great acrobat. The production is full of live music performed by a charming ladies’ band, stage movement and intelligent entertainment thanks to endless escapades of cunning servants and their masters fallen in love.
The play, translated by Ľubomír Feldek and Martin Hilský and directed by Róbert Mankovecký, will be presented daily from 18 to 24 July. Performances in the courtyard of the Bratislava Castle start at exactly at 8:30 p.m. and last until approximately until 11:40 p.m.
