Wiener Jeunesse Orchester

The composer, pianist, conductor, arranger, pedagogue and especially philanthropist Leonard Bernstein was a man with many faces. He appreciated the light muse as well as earnest projects – masses, symphonies and operas. Following the example of George Gershwin he maintained wide contacts with the legendary Broadway theatres. One of the charming products is the operetta Candide after a novella by Voltaire. Also Gustav Mahler was able to implant lighter muses and genres into tragic contexts. Nine symphonies, The Song of Lamentation and The Song of the Earth… an impressive collection of music on the world’s deterioration and on visions of new worlds. Following the example of Franz Schubert Mahler lamented quietly also in the suggestive song cycles – as in those to texts by his favourite Friedrich Rückert.
