BACH / STOKOWSKI, PENDERECKI, TCHAIKOVSKY

The pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach very often seduce experienced and less experienced musicians to various „comments“, or adjustments. Also the excellent conductor Leopold Stokowski dealt with their arrangements; the arrangements of the Toccata for Organ and Fugue in D minor, or Passacaglia in C minor for Orchestra are top of his activities in this respect. Also Krzysztof Penderecki responded to the era of J. S. Bach. This author belonged at first to the rawest experimenters, however gradually his rhetoric returned to the great models from the past. The segmented Concerto Grosso No. 1 is an outstanding example for this. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a grandmaster in the field of full length ballets. His last Opus in this genre is the Nutcracker, inspired by the Christmas Tale after the original by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann – one of the most-loved ballet pieces ever.
