GRIEG, ATTERBERG, MACHAJDÍK, WARLOCK

Edvard Grieg was a grandmaster in the sphere of musical miniature. He composed also several more extensive cyclic entities and forms. Grieg contributed with the charming Suite in the spirit of the old masters to the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of birth of the Norwegian-Danish playwright and philanthrope Ludwig Holberg. The original is dedicated to the piano, but the version for string orchestra is more famous. The Swedish composer Kurt Atterberg has belonged to the big talents; however, his sympathies for the National Socialists put him in a very bad light, so that his symphonies, operas, ballets and chamber music have disappeared from the repertoire. He was not fully rehabilitated until now, but his music proves him being a real master. Peter Machajdík is already a noted personality, in the past, however, he met a lack of understanding and accusations of purposeless rebellion. At ease he opens in his work the sensitive questions connected with the reality of people today – which are often really invisible for the society. The British composer Peter Warlock dealt with the study of English folklore and the music of Elizabethan era. In his most famous piece, the Capriol Suite, he worked with dances from the collection Orchésographie by the monk Thoinot Arbeau.
