LAND AND LANGUAGE

Artist: Agnès Thurnauer
Curator: Mira Sikorová-Putišová
Opening: Wednesday, December 7th 2016 from 6 until 8 pm
Exhibition space: Kunsthalle LAB

The exhibition of the French-Swiss author Agnès Thurnauer (born in 1962 in Paris) focuses on a series of 7 round-shaped pictures/buttons Portraits Grandeur Nature (2007 – 2009) that was presented in Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris in the years 2009 – 2011.
The essence of this series that shifts her previous „feminizing“ paintings towards a different, in terms of a form, minimized form, is a transformation of the well-known men’s names (as representations of important figures) in the global art history of the 20th century into their feminine variations (as a certain „alter ego“): Marcel Duchamp becomes Marcelle Duchamp, Andy Warhol is Annie Warhol etc.
The presentation also includes her other works, especially the XX story (since 2013) or Land and Language (2016) that comment on the “male” reading of the history of art based on the similar principle.
