Linen/Lab
The exhibition focuses on traditional and non-traditional technological processes of spinning linen, examples of weaving, knitting, as well as natural dyeing and experimental creations made of this plant material.
It complements the exhibition Tradition unconventionally: Linen and Hemp. Visitors to both galleries will thus get a complete picture of the possibilities of processing and using flax in the past and today.
The method of growing and processing flax has been known to man since the Neolithic. In the past, spun flax was cultivated almost throughout Europe and until the beginning of the 20th century was the main component of traditional clothing in Slovakia.
The curators of the exhibition have the ambition to introduce and educate the general public about the process of processing spun flax within the framework of the year-round theme of ÚĽUV, which is flax, hemp and nettle.
The objects on display, such as horsetails, horsetails and combs, breathe the past and surprise with their ageless beauty and functionality. Proof of the meaningfulness of returning to the roots in the form of design and at the same time functional tools for processing flax is also the project The Story of Flax, for which Vladimíra Maťaš received a special recognition for complete research in the field of design and craft in the National Design Award 2021. She was inspired by her great-grandmother, who grew flax, broke it, combed it, spun it, wove it and made it into household accessories or parts of traditional clothing.
The historical exhibits will be complemented by the current works of the students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, who in their outputs focused on the process of lace-making, weaving and natural dyeing of linen. Samples of materials by the author Zuzana Gombošová made experimentally from natural fibers, which were lent to the exhibition by the Slovak Design Center, are the result of the Plant matters project. The project focused on evaluating the use of plant fibers from Slovakia for the production of selected types of biocomposite materials based on bacterial cellulose.
