Mikrozvuk #29: Martyna Basta + alfa00
Directly from the “Alternativa” festival, the pair of experimental musicians Martyna Basta and alfa00 will arrive at “Mikrozvuk #29” on November 13.
After performing the Giuliani Guitar Concerto with the orchestra, Martyna Basta sold her classical guitar and replaced it with a sythesizer. The fruits of this radical transformation – she swapped not only an instrument but also a scene – are captured on her debut Making Eye Contact with Solitude, released last year on the independent Slovak label Warm Winters Ltd. The album, which was praised by the likes of The Quietus and NPR, placed her among notable new names on the European scene. It presents a complex, layered sound world where subtle motifs played on zither or harpsichord complement varied field recordings and wordless, shimmering vocals. One could say that it combines the ability to create powerful melodies with sacred grandeur and intimate authenticity in one moment.
Slavek Kwi alias alpha00 is a Czechoslovakia-born, Irish-based sound artist fascinated by environmental sounds, the process of their perception and the listener’s interaction with them, i.e. their interpretation. Under the names Artificial Memory Trace and alfa00 he has released dozens of recordings largely based on attentive listening to his surroundings, which is then presented in a highly subdued manner reminiscent of the lowercase movement. Despite prolific output, there is a remarkable patience in the way Kwi gives space to sounds in often extremely long compositions; he sculpts detailed textures that emerge imperceptibly from silence and blend back into it. When alpha00 describes sound in his unconventional texts as a space of unlimited possibilities, it may sound vague, but it speaks volumes about his approach to art. At LOM space he will present the Soundshield project, described as the product of the virtual collective uni.Sol_, whose roster of members is as remarkable as the theme of the recording: telepathy and synchronicity.
