Mikrozvuk #54: Tashi Dorji + Richard Hronský

In October, LOM space will host a concert from the Mikrozvuk series, featuring Richard Hronský and Tashi Dorji.

What happens when Tashi Dorji (Taši Dordže in Slovak), a Bhutanese guitarist with roots in metal and punk music, encounters the raw minimalism of American primitivism? First, he settles in North Carolina, where he begins with austere but all the more explosive improvisations. Gradually, he will introduce the structures of Buddhist temple music, which will quickly lead him to similar guitar loners who gather around hotspots such as Hermit Hut, Palilalia Records, and Drag City. We can mention, for example, Derek Bailey, Marisa Anderson, Ben Chasney, and Bill Orcut. Lyrical motifs penetrate his years of honed improvisations, where every strum and silence has a carefully determined place. They gain in intensity and aggression, as if the guitar were sometimes turning into a dry branch rattling in the wind. Later, they may become a little more subdued and empty themselves towards repetitiveness and meditativeness. However, the conclusion can only be added after a live experience.

This time, Richard Hronský will try out a more laboratory-like space at LOM, where he will present his current album Pohreb in a more comprehensive way. It was released in early September by the Slovak publishing house mappa, so it will also be a christening or a funeral, depending on what Rišo comes up with. There will be an introductory speech, there will be a fujara, there will be field recordings, and there are rumors of secret guests. Pohreb is a personal album, which was recently described very nicely by Czech journalist Pavel Klusák: Acoustic drones seem to collect some atmosphere that hangs in the air and only amplify its resonance. We also hear fragments of real rituals, singing, and organs; Richard quotes them rather than directly following them without distance. It is a very nice personal remix of the situation “this is where I came from and traditions walked around,” somehow unpretentiously respecting people and demons connecting the past with the present.
