Women in the Slovak National Uprising | Erika Mészárosová
Visual artist Erika Mészárosová presents Women in the SNP, an exhibition about the authentic stories of women in the 1944 Slovak National Uprising. Opening 27 August at Station Gallery, Bratislava.
The Slovak National Uprising (SNP) of 1944 is regarded as one of the most morally significant events in modern Slovak history. It was a broad resistance movement against Nazi occupation and a defining moment for civic and cultural identity. Yet, its legacy has often been the subject of political and social debate.
Visual artist Erika Mészárosová presents Women in the SNP, an exhibition dedicated to making visible the voices and experiences of women who took part in the Uprising. Rather than focusing on heroic myths, Mészárosová highlights authentic, personal and deeply human stories. The exhibition stages the wartime lives of three women, each engaged in the resistance in a different way.
The accompanying programme includes guided tours, thematic walks following the footsteps of female partisans in Bratislava, creative workshops for all generations, and a music performance Song of a Partisan Woman, reinterpreting historical partisan songs for today.
“Amidst today’s crises – war, radicalisation, misogyny – we need new examples of courage and solidarity. I believe the forgotten stories of these women are part of our cultural heritage, and that art is a way to bring them back into it,” says Mészárosová.
