Visitor Center At the Red Crayfish

Discover the unique atmosphere of the historic Red Crayfish Pharmacy – a place where baroque heritage meets modern visitor services.

🏛️ The Red Crayfish Pharmacy: Where History Meets Hospitality

Step into the beautifully restored Red Crayfish Pharmacy, where the preserved interior of an 18th-century pharmacy blends seamlessly with modern services for visitors of Michael’s Gate.

Located in a late Baroque townhouse partially built into Bratislava’s medieval fortification, the space includes the remains of a barbican, once part of the city’s defensive walls.

🧪 A Glimpse into Pharmaceutical History

Inside the original pharmacy officina, visitors can admire:

  • authentic historical furniture

  • baroque-classicist frescoes

  • a restored pharmacy sign from the 19th century with a distinctive red crayfish

These features reflect the pharmacy’s legacy, which dates back to the 16th century and functioned until it was handed over to the city museum in 1953.

🛍️ A Modern Visitor Centre

Today, the space serves as the main visitor centre for Michael’s Gate:

  • 🎟️ ticket sales, souvenirs, and books

  • 🎒 luggage storage

  • ☕ a relaxing environment to enjoy the atmosphere or get tips from our staff

🛡️ New Exhibition: Defending the City

A new exhibition space expands on the story of medieval Bratislava, continuing the narrative from Michael’s Gate and featuring:

  • models of historical city defenses

  • interactive displays

  • connections between pharmacy and urban protection

The exhibition is barrier-free and accessible to all, including those unable to climb the tower.

🌿 A Public Space for Everyone

In the warmer months, you can also enjoy the Red Crayfish Summer Reading Room, managed by the Bratislava City Library – making the site a welcoming and inclusive public space for meeting, relaxing, or discovering the city’s rich history.

👨‍🦽‍➡️ The space was designed with an emphasis on accessibility so that even those who cannot reach St. Michael’s Tower due to barriers can enjoy its contents.
