During December, Bratislava glittered in the White Night Christmas Edition. Throughout December and the start of 2021, visitors of Slovakia’s capital could enjoy various light installations in public areas during walks in the old town.

The coronavirus crisis that has affected the whole world has also had a significant impact on Slovakia’s culture. Due to the pandemic, the traditional White Night, which attracts numerous visitors and art-lovers to the streets of the capital annually, were not able to experience the festival in the usual form. However, visitors could still encounter unique art in secret corners of Bratislava.

The waterfront on the old town side of the Danube in Bratislava lit up with art depicting twenty mini-stories – symbols of the river and life around it. The organisers’ objective was to bring the art safely to the streets of the city at the time of the new coronavirus pandemic.

“Life on the Danube project complemented the public space with unique art installations. The Danube collects energy on the upper flow and brings it to the city. Light images and characters come out of the river and people can stop by them,” said Vladimír Grežo, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bratislava Tourist Board. Stories on the Danube are part of 13 works of this year’s Christmas edition of White Night.

White Night is a prestigious international art project designed to bring contemporary forms of art closer to the general public, as well as the unconventional, unmarked and unknown places of European capitals. White Night started in Paris in 2002. In 2013, more than two and a half million people visited the unique art project.
