Living Danube Limes Day

The journey in the footsteps of the Romans promises a day full of fun and getting to know the Roman history

As part of the Interreg Danube Transnational Programme project “Living Danube Limes” and the European Days of Archaeology, the Municipal Monument Preservation Institute in Bratislava prepared a trip to the famous Roman past for Saturday, 18 June.

Come to see the life of the Romans in the ancient locations of Gerulata in Rusovce and Carnuntum in Austria. Both UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage sites have joined forces to raise awareness of the Roman cultural heritage.

Living Danube Limes Day will offer a courtesy bus connection between the two ancient locations in the Slovak-Austrian border and guides who will provide a professional interpretation. The connection between Gerulata and Carnuntum will be supplemented by a stop at the Bratislava Castle, where visitors can see an attractive exhibition Romans and Slovakia. The exhibition also features original finds from Rusovce and Devín, so you can get to know the rich Roman history of Bratislava and its surroundings.

A new exhibition will present the findings of the Gerulata site as part of Limes Romanus in Gerulata, which has recently been inscribed into the UNESCO list. At Carnuntum you will experience the unique atmosphere of a truly vibrant Roman history. Little visitors will certainly be pleased by the children’s festival. Bratislava Castle will welcome visitors to the exhibition Romans and Slovakia. You can cycle the route or get on a tourist bus.

You can also take a bike ride along the old Roman route from Carnunta to Gerulata in the footsteps of the Romans. The bike trip will be accompanied by Kristián Elschek, whose interpretation will be available at stops in Bad Deutsch Altenburg (Museum Carnuntinum), the Roman military amphitheatre, the Roman town of Petronell Carnuntum, the civil amphitheatre, at the Pagan Gate and at the Museum of the Ancient Gerulata in Rusovce.

Living Danube Limes connects the Danube Region with its shared Roman heritage, fosters a common Roman brand, safeguards and preserves cultural heritage, develops sustainable tourism solutions as well as works towards a Cultural Route spanning the whole Danube Region.
