The renovation of a family home, where the original structure engages in a dialogue with the materials used, accompanied by commentary from the architects at MIMOarchitekti. As recently as the 1960s, Petržalka resembled a village with small buildings. However, its historical identity was disrupted by vigorous and insensitive development. The architectural concept for the renovation relied on a striking contrast between the traditional and the modern. The original structure retains its clear recognisability, whilst the new interventions deliberately differ from it in both form and materials. The result is a seamless connection between the preserved past and elements of the present. The original building elements – such as brickwork, roughcast and wooden details – have been left exposed, thereby establishing a direct link to the building’s past. Furthermore, a considerate approach to materials is guided by the ecological principle of not discarding anything, but rather reusing, adapting or transforming everything.
