An opportunity to discover Pressburg as a key hub in the Central European network of artistic connections.

Curator Dominika Zbončáková will introduce the city through works from the permanent exhibition ‘Central European Baroque Painting and Sculpture’.

The movement of artists between artistic centres was a natural phenomenon in the Kingdom of Hungary during the Baroque period as well. As the coronation, ecclesiastical and administrative centre of the Kingdom of Hungary, Pressburg represented a major hub in the Central European network of artistic contacts, attracting painters and sculptors from various parts of the Habsburg Monarchy.

This guided tour will showcase selected artists whose work is linked to Pressburg, although their influence extended far beyond the city’s borders and those of Hungary. Through the works of Paul Troger, Franz Anton Palko, Jozef Kurtz, Franz Xaver Messerschmidt and other masters, it will shed light on the workings of art commissions, the movement of artists between different regions, and the connections between Vienna, Moravia, Hungary and other centres of Central Europe.

The tour will present Pressburg as a meeting place for patrons, artists and diverse artistic traditions. Selected works will also demonstrate the role the city played in the dissemination of Baroque art and how it contributed to shaping the region’s artistic landscape.
