Mikrozvuk #61: Juli Deák + Bolka

In April, LOM space will host a concert from the Mikrozvuk series, featuring Gosheven and Johana Klára Kratochvílová.

Line-up:

  • 19:30 Doors
  • 20:00 Bolka
  • 21:00 Juli Deák

The transverse flute is alive and well, and Juli Deák has recorded one of this year’s standout albums on it. On the album Brisk, she blends improvisation—in which she lets the silence and echoes of a Budapest church speak for themselves—with the virtuosity she honed while performing in various international orchestras and jazz projects. The result is anti-gravitational compositions reminiscent of Bendik Giske or Colin Stetson, yet they also feature flashes of medieval or folk music. At the same time, they are highly evocative, recalling the mythological worlds once conjured from her flute by Joanna Brouk. Her focus also centers on the materiality and the very sound of the transverse flute—the pressure of the breath, the flow of sound, resonance, and the delicate mechanics of the metal keys. Juli patiently sustains minimalist melodic lines, allowing the phrases to gradually unfold and settle in the space. Brisk was released in late April. She performed it at the Swedish festival Intonal and will now present it at LOM space.

Bolka will be presenting his latest album, schwarzkopf, which is set to be released in early June on the mappa label. You could think of this as a pre-release party. With Bolka, you can imagine glitch music and indietronica mixed with sweet folk melodies, trance, uplifting bath music, and wild accordion rants. There’s a kind of refined balancing act to it. A bit like Animal Collective, but sometimes more solo than collective. A bit like Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, but sometimes more collective than lonely. The latest tracks from the upcoming album schwarzkopf are deconstructed ballads that move in a strange space between vulnerability and mischief, in a place where intimate confessions meet radical playfulness.

Admission is free for all Ukrainians. All you need to do is show proof of citizenship and reserve tickets via email at space@lom.audio.
