Through ceramics and porcelain, Katarína Bajkayová’s exhibition explores desire, sensuality, and indecision—from the conception of a child to the prevailing social conditions.

The objects, which showcase the transformation of materials, offer an opportunity for an intimate connection with the creation of a space for nurturing life. The modeling and luster of the glaze, with their sensuality, share in the joy of creation. In the artist’s hands, ceramics and porcelain are widely interpreted, ranging from free-form to utilitarian objects that are both durable and fragile. Through deep reliefs, we arrive at a reference to works in public space, thereby raising a question about the situatedness of today’s female artist. After drying, ceramic clay retains the trace of touch, of the moment. Through firing, the indentation created by the palm becomes a permanent part of the object’s daily life or existence. The glaze reflects the world around us, thereby offering critical potential. This potential is also conveyed, much like in the prologue to the 2022 exhibition, by a booklet of texts by environmentalist and climate activist Zuzana Jarošová, special educator Klaudia Husárová, visual artist Alex Selmeci, and the exhibition’s curator.

Katarína Bajkayová (1994) completed her doctoral studies at the Faculty of Arts of the Technical University of Košice, where she also earned her master’s degree in the Studio of Free Creativity 3D. She creates spatial installations using ceramics in combination with other materials. Currently, she is primarily interested in themes of social relations, housing, and eroticism, which she explores in the context of the natural sciences, mythology, architecture, and literature.
