Organizer’s text:
Discover the key figures who shaped life in Pressburg in the 18th century. Through selected Baroque portraits from the permanent exhibition, Dominika Zbončáková, curator of the GMB’s collection of old paintings and sculptures, will introduce them in greater detail.
A guided tour of selected Baroque portraits will introduce the figures who shaped the social, political, and cultural life of Pressburg in the 18th century. Through period portraiture, visitors will gain insight into the interiors of palaces, monasteries, and art studios, and learn who the city’s residents might have encountered on the streets of Pressburg.
The tour will feature portraits of Hungarian Primate Imre Esterházy, royal portraits of Maria Theresa, Joseph II, and Maria Christina of Habsburg-Lorraine, as well as a portrait of the young noblewoman Johanna Maria de Walderode. The tour will also include a portrait by sculptor Georg Rafael Donner, as well as the so-called “Character Heads” by Franz Xaver Messerschmidt.
Selected works will highlight the portrait as a tool of representation, power, and personal identity, and will offer insight into the visual culture of Baroque Pressburg.
