His story always unfolds the same way, and yet differently
Anyone who deals with one of Shakespeare’s most famous texts will leave something of himself in it. This year, the Summer Shakespeare Festival will offer a translation of Ľubomír Feldek and Martin Hilský, directed by Pavel Khek.
At the beginning of Hamlet, Shakespeare posed a question, and there are even more questions in silence beyond the end of his personal tragedy than at the beginning. Questions mirror other questions … the story can never end because it keeps giving us new questions. How to resist evil, to be or not to be? What to do? How to act? Does it even make sense to act?
Hamlet is a fascinating play in its structure – it is really a da Vinci code – where everything is related to everything. It combines political tragedy with family tragedy, one affecting the other. Tragedy of thought and action. The young prince of Denmark returns from his studies to his father’s funeral. The place on the throne and by the side of the queen (his mother) already belongs to his uncle. Who is Hamlet, the hypersensitive spoiled son or the pensive intellectual or the irreconcilable avenger? This Hamlet will be somewhat of a seeker of truth in these torn times. It turns out that exposing injustice and conviction is not the most difficult thing, it is much more difficult not to lose oneself.
The story of madness in a crazy time, which very much resembles the present time. Where lies the boundary of the human conscience, the courage to face the evil and the power to take reparation into their own hands? Is it possible to keep a clean slate in the dirt? And can love survive this process? A play about whether to live is more than just being…
