65 years of music that connects generations

The Slovak Chamber Orchestra celebrates its 65th anniversary in its subscription series. On Sunday, February 22, 2026, you can commemorate the anniversary of its first public concert at the Slovak Philharmonic.

The program is identical to the one performed on February 22, 1961, at the House of Enlightenment in Bratislava-Nivy under the baton of Bohdan Warchal.

The concerti grossi by Arcangelo Corelli and George Frideric Handel were compositions that provided space for the interpretive mastery of individual players and the orchestra as a whole to shine. The second half of the program, consisting of works by Henry Purcell and Benjamin Britten, was innovative. Today, both works – Purcell’s Abdelazer Suite, Z. 570, and Britten’s Simple Symphony – are frequently performed by the Slovak Chamber Orchestra and many ensembles around the world.

Prof. Bohdan Warchal led the chamber orchestra for 40 years with only a short unexpected break. He passed the baton of artistic director to Ewald Danel, who has been tirelessly continuing in this role since January 2001. At Sunday’s concert, former members will join the current members of the ensemble. Together, they will commemorate the anniversary directly on the concert stage.
