Adela Mede & Štefan Szabó: Dalok – album release

Adela Mede & Štefan Szabó will present the concert premiere of their album of Hungarian folk songs, Dalok (to be released on 42far), accompanied, exceptionally, by a full ensemble of friends and fellow musicians. The performance will feature a selection of tracks from the album, performed by the full line-up and the guest artists who appeared on the record.

After the concert, the evening will continue with informal fun at the bar, featuring impromptu music, conversation and socialising.

Adela Mede & Štefan Szabó never had any ambitions to record an album. United by their Slovak-Hungarian identity and a deep love of folk music, however, they began to meet up to sing together… just to sing. They did this almost every week for about a year. As they come from different musical backgrounds, they brought diverse and unique elements to their collaboration. Both contributed Hungarian folk songs they’d found on old records, in online archives or in the depths of their memories.

The album ‘Dalok’ – simply ‘Songs’ – is the result of this collaborative singing. They recorded it over a single weekend at a cottage in Stupava with their friends. It captures the intimate atmosphere in which the group approached these time-tested compositions with both respect and curiosity. Mede and Szabó wanted the melodies to be preserved and the origins of these songs to be respected, but they also encouraged exploratory and experimental approaches during the recording, whether in terms of instrumentation, tempo or tone colour.
