This time, the main theme of the natural history guided walk through the area of Devín Castle and its surroundings will focus on plants and ecology. With botanist Katarína Devanová, we will explore the thermophilic vegetation on the castle hill, discuss mosaic mowing and grazing, why it is necessary, and the significance of grazing for the critically endangered and protected Artemisia austriaca. We will talk about the importance of forestlessness for many species, how the landscape would look without human intervention, and what we need to do to preserve the richest biodiversity possible. We’ll also attempt to answer why it’s essential to maintain high biodiversity areas in urban and residential environments, demonstrating practical examples on-site.
