Gianina Cărbunariu: My Beloved Enemy

A sharp, humorous and empathetic contemporary drama exploring social polarization, fading dialogue, and the search for understanding in divided times.

Slovak National Theatre – Drama Hall
16 May 2026 | 19:00

Created and directed by acclaimed Romanian playwright and director Gianina Cărbunariu, My Beloved Enemy examines social tensions, stereotypes, and the question of whether genuine dialogue is still possible.

The story unfolds during a Christmas dinner that was meant to celebrate an upcoming christening. What begins as a family gathering gradually turns into an emotional battleground as conversations spiral into heated debates about politics, migration, work, morality, and historical trauma. As tensions rise, buried fears and old prejudices resurface.

Blending realistic family drama with symbolic elements and dark humour, the production offers a powerful theatrical experience that is both thought-provoking and emotionally engaging.
