Invisible Architectures: Workshop priestorovej hudobnej kompozície

Organizer’s text:

How can we create music that exists not only in time but also in space? The
Invisible Architectures workshop at the new A4 Sound Lab multichannel sound studio will explore spatial sound from compositional, technical, and psychoacoustic perspectives. Participants will learn about compositional approaches and will also have the opportunity to create their own spatial compositions.

Saturday, June 13 – Sunday, June 14 / 10:00 AM–5:00 PM / workshop / free admission with registration

Monday, June 15 – Friday, June 19 / individual work at A4 Sound Lab

Saturday, June 20 – Sunday, June 21 / 10:00 AM–5:00 PM / workshop conclusion and presentation of the resulting compositions

Who is it for?

The course is intended for young sound artists, composers, and experimental musicians aged 16 to 30 (in accordance with Erasmus+ program requirements) who already have basic experience creating music in a DAW (digital audio workstation) program or the Max/MSP environment or similar, and are interested in experimental composition, psychoacoustics, and multichannel sound. You don’t need to be an expert in spatial music; what matters is a willingness to experiment, listen, and work on your own material. Priority will be given to people with disabilities.

What’s it about?

Over the course of two weekends and individual creative sessions, we will focus on listening to and analyzing spatial works, perceptual phenomena, working in Reaper with the IEM Plugin Suite, the basics of Max, binaural listening, ambisonics, granulation, decorrelation, modeling sound sources, and practical preparation of compositions for multichannel playback or performance. The program will also include independent work between sessions and a final sharing of works-in-progress or finished miniatures.

What to bring?

Participants should bring their own laptop and headphones. If you don’t have either of these but still want to participate, please contact us. We will send technical instructions and recommended software tools in advance: Reaper, IEM Plugin Suite, SonoBus, Max 9 trial, and libraries for ambisonics and VBAP.

Who?

The workshop will be led by Patrik Herman, a composer and sound artist working at the intersection of spectral composition, electroacoustic music, and software development. He is the creator of multichannel compositions, installations, and the Spectra environment, focused on additive synthesis and spectral composition.

In what language?

The workshop will be held in Slovak.

How much does it cost?

Participation is free. However, capacity is limited. You must register via this form.
