Josip Plečnik – Visionary of Central Europe

The Slovak National Museum at Bratislava Castle presents an exhibition on Josip Plečnik – the architect behind the transformation of Prague Castle at the request of President Masaryk and the creator of iconic works in Ljubljana, now part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Event: Josip Plečnik – Central European Architect

📍 Venue: Slovak National Museum – Historical Museum, Bratislava Castle
🎟️ Admission: According to SNM price list (see www.snm.sk)

Description

This exhibition introduces the work of one of the most important European architects of the 20th century – Josip Plečnik (1872–1957), student of Otto Wagner, who transformed Prague Castle, reshaped Ljubljana, and left his mark in Vienna. It features original models, drawings, archival documents, and works by his students and contemporaries.

A special section highlights Plečnik’s relationship with Slovakia – his study trip through Slovak regions in 1920, inspiration from folk architecture and symbolism, and links with Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič. Exhibits include the model of the Bradlo Mound, Jurkovič’s villa, student dormitory furniture, and a war cemetery cross from Galicia.

The exhibition underscores architecture as both cultural identity and a bridge between tradition and modernity.
