Microsound #28: Heta Bilaletdin + Alexandra Spence + Samuli Tanner

Mikrosound #28 will introduce musicians Heta Bilaletdin, Alexandra Spence and Samuli Tanner on October 15 at LOM space.

Heta Bilaletdin is a glittering treasure of the Finnish experimental scene. Her melancholic pop dissolved in field recordings, lo-fi bangers and ghostly bedroom haze will remind you of the best of the local music gang. You can place her in the lineage of artists like Tomutonttu, Olimpia Splendid, Kuupu, Lau Nau, Olli Aarni, Samuli Tanner, Marja Ahti, and Kemialliset Ystävät. Just pick any album from Fonal or Kraak labels and you will make up your mind. Heta relies on playing with various found objects, dusty four-track tapes and synths that she seems to have found in a box of children’s junk. Her songs are catchy, intelligent, fun and you’ll quickly develop an addiction to them. If you’re still floundering, you can check out her drawings, animations and films, which, like her music, often political and planetary, exploring subtle connections, myths, power structures and hidden choreographies in our coexistence.

Alexandra Spence is a sound artist and musician living on unceded Wangal land in Sydney, Australia. Through her practice Alex attempts to reimagine the intricate relationships between the listener, the object, and the surrounding environment as a kind of communion or conversation. Most recently, it is her personal relationship with the Pacific Ocean and the connection between different bodies and water that she has been exploring on this year’s albums a veil, the sea (mappa) and Blue waves, Green waves (Room 40). Her aesthetic favours field recordings, analogue technologies and object interventions. Live performances are therefore a mix of these techniques, which always guarantees a completely different site-specific experience. Alexandra completed a Master of Fine Arts in sound installation at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver. In 2018, she resided briefly in the UK to undertake a mentorship with David Toop and featured in a BBC4 radio series by Timothy Morton.

Samuli Tanner is an electronic music composer and drummer from Finland. His experimental electronic music has a strange appeal: clumsy on purpose, sometimes dark, sometimes syrup, sometimes makes one dance, sometimes falls to pieces. Samuli has previously worked under the names Siihhi, Worldbank and Ponytail.
