Mikrozvuk #34: Sugai Ken + Dialect
Microzvuk #34 will bring Japan’s Sugai Ken and UK’s Andrew PM Hunt, who goes by the name Dialect, to the LOM space.
Sugai Ken:
Blending Japanese folklore, geographical sound design and ambience, Sugai Ken has been an active composer in Japan’s underground scene since the mid-90s. His laid-back and organic compositions, whether self-published or released on renowned labels such as the Japanese EM imprint, present re-shaped imaginations of sound. The artist leads the listener through acoustic environments of musique concrete, folk, symphonic music and what he calls “the ambience of night in Japan”. Since his 2010 debut ToKiShiNe on Freed Records, Ken has been producing a steady flow of releases reaching a new distinctive process of shaping sounds on 2016’s 鯰上 — On the Quakefish on Lullabies for Insomniacs.
Dialect:
Dialect is the solo project of British composer and multi-instrumentalist Andrew PM Hunt. Utilizing an array of electroacoustic techniques alongside traditional acoustic instrumentation, he creates an emotive yet highly personal form of musical collage. His most recent album ‘Under~Between’ was released by Brooklyn based institution RVNG Intl to wide critical acclaim and embraces the spontaneity of free group improvisation alongside the melodic rigour of post-minimalism. Influenced by cybernetics as well as buddhist thought, his music often occupies a uncanny space between the synthetic and the organic with wandering piano lines triggering stuttering MIDI files and lush chamber arrangements dissolving into washes of found sound.
