Pavel Vilikovský: A Dog on the Road

“A Dog on the Road” is a brilliant theatrical adaptation exploring literature, culture, and Slovak identity through irony, insight, and a surprising sense of empathy.

Slovak National Theatre – Drama Hall
26 May 2026 | 19:00
30 May 2026 | 19:00

Based on the award-winning novella by Pavel Vilikovský (Readers’ Prize Anasoft litera 2011), the production offers a realistic yet self-ironic portrait of post-communist society after the Velvet Revolution. It follows an editor sent to Austria to present Slovak writers, only to find himself in a series of absurd, humorous, and at times tragicomic situations.

The story reflects on national identity, cultural stereotypes, and the relationship between small European nations. Alongside this, a more intimate layer emerges through his encounter with Margareta, opening themes of love, maturity, and the urgency of living life fully in the present.

Directed by Dušan D. Pařízek, the production is one of the most acclaimed Slovak theatre works of recent seasons, winning multiple Dosky 2024 awards, including Best Production and Best Direction. Performances by Alexander Bárta, Ľuboš Kostelný, Robert Roth, and Richard Stanke were also awarded by the Tatra Banka Foundation for the Arts.
