Start with Children: Cany Ash

Housing designed for community, play, and local life.

How can we design housing and neighborhoods that foster intergenerational connections, everyday play, and children as active citizens of their own streets? Cany Ash is a renowned expert in neighborhood design and urban regeneration.

She is the co-founder of the award-winning London-based architecture firm Ash Sakula, which focuses on community-oriented and sustainable housing rooted in the local context and everyday life.

In her lecture, she will present innovative models of community housing that support intergenerational coexistence, care, and play, while also giving children real space to participate in shaping their environment. Using examples from Ash Sakula’s portfolio—from The Malings, a waterfront neighborhood that won the grand prize at the Housing Design Awards, to the Profitable Neighbourhoods concept, which doubles building density while creating safe streets and vibrant public spaces, she will demonstrate how closely connected streets with mixed ownership and homes oriented toward shared spaces can foster neighborly relationships, the local economy, and an environment where children naturally explore, play, and make connections.

It will also offer insights into how to translate these principles into planning and design, and demonstrate how architecture and urbanism can contribute to strengthening social ties.
