Tradition Untraditionally: Natural Weaving Materials

Basket waving as a free form of knitting is one of the oldest crafts. It was used by the original cultures on all inhabited continents, and in terms of technology and raw materials it has been preserved in an almost unchanged form to this day. In the pre-industrial era and before the discovery of alternative materials in the 20th century, natural fabrics were an important easily available and quickly renewable material.

In the exposition, designer overlaps from the materials of wicker and linden are represented the most – interpretations of the craft in furniture, lamps, wicker objects and objects made of linden by various professional designers and students. “We see the future of the use of natural weaving materials in craft mainly with a strong ecological focus. The sustainable cultivation, harvesting, processing and problem-free disposal of affordable, easily renewable materials give the basket-weaving craft a bright perspective.” states the exhibition curator.
