Coronation Procession

Admire the royal parade passing through the city and hold your breath over the bravery and dexterity of the knights.

Coronation Procession

Admire the passage of the royal entourage, clergy, nobility and the entire coronation procession, and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of historic traditions and ceremonial court life.

During coronations, the city welcomed numerous guests and artists who left detailed descriptions of these extraordinary events. Thanks to them, we today have a relatively accurate picture of coronation ceremonies and accompanying celebrations, which are commemorated during the Bratislava Coronation Days 2026 (24 – 26 July 2026).

This year’s coronation programme is dedicated to one of the most significant monarchs, Maria Theresa, and her symbolic return to the coronation city of Bratislava.

The procession moves through the historic city centre, bringing to life the era when Bratislava was one of the most important coronation cities in Europe.

What to expect

The procession features symbolic representations of monarchs crowned in Bratislava, accompanied by their historical retinues. The royal court, nobility, clergy and musicians together create a vivid depiction of coronation traditions.

Visitors will witness the evolution of historical costumes, armour and insignia. Throughout the procession, a herald provides context and explains the historical significance of individual scenes.

After the procession reaches its final location, the programme continues with historical performances and staged re-enactments.

Coronation Oaths

A key part of the Hungarian coronation ritual were two oaths – the coronation oath and the oath to the country.

The coronation oath symbolised the monarch’s readiness to defend the realm. It included a symbolic horseback gesture and the raising of the coronation sword towards the four cardinal directions.

The oath to the country bound the monarch to respect the laws, customary rights and existing privileges. This act formed the foundation of the relationship between the ruler and the estates of the kingdom.
