Architecture and Czech Politics from the 19th to the 21st Centuries

The exhibition in the residential building of the Slovak National Museum shows the connection between architecture and politics

The exhibition project follows the mutual relations between architecture and politics, reflects the intricate modern history of the Czech Republic and, in their context, views architecture not only as a passive means of national and state representation, but also as an active component involved in creating a social and political atmosphere.

For five years, the project has followed the diverse forms of so-called political architecture and the ways in which architecture and urbanism have contributed to the shaping of Czech politics over the last two hundred years, from Austria-Hungary through the period of the common Czechoslovak state to today’s Czech Republic.

The exhibition forms the final element in the five-year-long research project of the same name realised by the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM), investigating architecture and politics in their mutual and bilateral relations. You can see it in the impressive seat of the national museum on Vajanský Embankment until February 5.

The content of the exhibition presents visitors with examples of such buildings and projects of “political architecture” that more or less consciously represent these ideas or even co-create them on their own initiative.

Come and see how politics influences architecture. In addition to iconic buildings in the Czech Republic, you will also find architectural and urban projects from the territory of today’s Slovakia.
