Ballet La Esmeralda

La Esmeralda, the ballet to the music by Cesare Pugni inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel Notre Dame of Paris, was introduced in world première by Jules Perrot in 1844 in London – with the legendary Carlotta Grisi as Esmeralda. It was, however, only the 1886 version by Marius Petipa that earned the work the global fame. The Slovak première of La Esmeralda pays homage to the prodigy of choreography Marius Petipa (1818 – 1910) to mark his bicentenary. The new version of the monumental ballet fresco Esmeralda (based on Petipa’s concept) is produced by the major Russian choreographer Vasily Medvedev and choreographer Stanislav Fečo.

The set and costumes were designed by the renowned Russian artists of the Bolshoi Theatre, Alyona Pikalova and Yelena Zaitseva. Esmeralda, a story of a woman for whose beauty the entire Paris competes is an opportunity to introduce yet another of the ballet treasures that brings along brilliant technique, sensuality and temperament.

The production is brought to you in collaboration with the Petipa Heritage Found St. Petersburg.
