Saint-Saëns, Rachmaninoff, Debussy

Camille Saint-Saëns was a pragmatic musician. But also he had his ideals; one of them was Franz Liszt with his concept of symphonic poem. The mythic story of Phaeton – the godly driver of the sun chariot – is one of the contributions to the celebration of the spirit of Lizst. Also Sergei Rachmaninoff admired the work of Franz Liszt and similarly as his great model he wrote promptly and quickly. Yet, the fate of the Piano Concerto No. 4 was different; it was written slowly and painfully and until today it is a big mystery for many pianists. The tonal generosity and independence from conventional structures made Claude Debussy a kind of rider on a fiery horse. The cycle Images is one of the highlights of his „fair ride “ behind the then poetic borders.
