Roman Games

Experience a journey back to the Roman Empire at the authentic setting of the Ancient Gerulata Museum in Rusovce. Meet legionaries, gladiators, weapons, and the spirit of antiquity.

Program

Balkanska Street – Post Office

The grand opening ceremony with the procession of Empress Eusebia and Roman soldiers to Ancient Gerulata will introduce the entire day of the event. Visitors can look forward to the children’s puppet theater LabyrinTY presented by Féder Theatre, a discussion about what the Romans left us under the Rusovský manor house with Erik Hrnčiarik, a La3no Cubano concert combined with a workshop on playing percussion and period instruments, as well as a discussion about Roman glass in Gerulata with Danica Staššíková – Štukovská and Jana Mellnerová Šuteková, which will also introduce the inscription of handmade glassmaking on the list of intangible cultural heritage of Slovakia. The day will be closed by the closing ceremony with the procession of Empress Eusebia and Roman soldiers.

Gerulatská Street – Ancient Gerulata

The day will open with a performance by the Military History Club Teokratos, which will present the training of young legionaries. Afterwards, archaeology students from the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava, together with graduates of Classical Archaeology of Trnava University in Trnava, will present archaeological objects from the Museum of Ancient Gerulata.

This will be followed by a discussion about the late antique residence in Cífera – Pác with Prof. Vladimír Varsik, a screening of the film Building a Ship: Peculiarities of Reconstruction and Efforts for Sustainability, and a demonstration of Roman medicine – the treatment of a wounded legionnaire. Another discussion will focus on the earthquake in the 4th century and new knowledge about the significance of Gerulata according to the latest archaeological findings, accompanied by archaeologist Vladimír Turčan.

The program continues with a re-presentation of archaeological objects and a discussion about the Roman camp of Brigetio with archaeologist Emese Számadó from the Klapka György Museum in Komárom. The screening of the film Shipbuilding: Craft and Tools will be complemented by another presentation by archaeology students.

The conclusion of the event will feature a demonstration of formations and combat in late antiquity, followed by a discussion on the processing of the Carnuntum finds with Katarína Tökölyová from the Amt der NÖ Landesregierung – Department of Arts and Culture, and a welcoming military parade as a ceremonial end to the program.

Rusovce Castle – Maďarská Street
The lecture “What the Romans left us under the Rusovce Castle” will take place several times during the day and will present the latest archaeological discoveries from the early Roman period. Erik Hrnčiarik, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Trnava University and Head of Archaeological Research at the Castle in Rusovce, together with Tomáš Kolon, an archaeologist from the Department of Classical Archaeology at Trnava University, will present new findings and insights into the significance and historical development of the Rusovce Castle.
