Ancient Gerulata Rusovce

Just a few minutes from the city center of Bratislava, in Rusovce, you’ll find a place where history truly comes to life. Ancient Gerulata was already built at the end of the 1st century as a Roman military camp – a fortified castellum on the borders of the Roman Empire.

Today, this unique archaeological site is part of the transnational UNESCO World Heritage site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Danube Limes”, inscribed in 2021.

A Journey Back to Roman Times

Gerulata was an important military post on the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. Around the fort, a civilian settlement, burial grounds, and infrastructure for daily life once developed.

Today, visitors can walk among the remains of structures dating from the 2nd to 4th century. The site was rediscovered in the 1960s and has since been gradually revealing its secrets to archaeologists and visitors alike.

A Museum Full of Stories

The site includes a museum with a modern exhibition that brings the Roman world to life. In the lapidarium, you’ll find stone monuments and archaeological finds that tell the story of Gerulata.

Highlights include:

  • Roman weapons,
  • everyday pottery and objects,
  • jewelry and personal items,
  • Roman tombstones,
  • coins and reliefs.

The exhibition helps visitors imagine what life was like on the edge of the Roman Empire – from military service to everyday life in the settlement.

Where History Meets Nature

Gerulata is a perfect half-day trip in Bratislava, especially in spring and summer. The site is surrounded by nature and can easily be reached by bike along the Danube embankment or by a walk from Rusovce.

Nearby, you’ll also find the Rusovce Lakes, which add to the peaceful atmosphere of the area.

Spring is especially beautiful here, as the site is planted with herbs and plants known since ancient times, such as rosemary and olive trees – symbolically connecting the past with the present.
