Visit of the Apponyi palace

The Bratislava City Museum offers visitors a tour of the Apponyi palace.

The rococo palace in the historic center of the city hides preserved rare architectural elements of the interior on the first and second floors. It was built by Count Juraj Apponyi in 1761-1762. The palace is named after the owner Juraj Apponyi. Thanks to him, the originally older Baroque building underwent a fundamental reconstruction in 1761-1762, which gave the building its present appearance with the preserved original interior decoration.

In 1867, the building was bought by the city for the needs of the municipality and the cartouche above the gate was added with the city coat of arms. Already on the plan of the building from 1904, the rooms on the ground floor are marked as the premises of the City Museum. In 1926, the museum opened an exhibition here in the representative halls on the first floor, in 1930 a picture gallery on the second floor, and the following year it opened the Bratislava Winery Museum on the ground floor. In the following decades, the first floor connected to the Old Town Hall was used for exhibition purposes. On the second floor, there were first offices, later a depository, and the Regional Library was located here.

In the years 2004-2008, an extensive reconstruction of the palace was carried out, and after its completion, the museum set up exhibitions of historical interiors and viticulture, and in the attic a study depository of ceramics, porcelain and glass. The palace became an independent object without a communication connection with the Old Town Hall.
