Coronation Route
Precious coronation valuables are exhibited in the National Bank
Bratislava boasts almost three hundred years of coronation history. Ten kings, one queen and seven royal consorts were crowned in the Roman Catholic St. Martin Cathedral. The coronation church is currently one of the city’s most sought-after tourist attractions.
The first part of the exhibition depicts the monarchs and their wives crowned in the then Pressburg, in the form of rare coronation medals and tokens. A unique coronation-themed exhibition will also offer Jan William Drnek’s photographs, showing the coronation St. Martin’s Cathedral.
Rare numismatic artefacts and coronation valuables comprise more than 60 pieces of rare coronation medals, tokens, objects and coins from the collections of the National Bank of Slovakia, more precisely from the Museum of Coins and Medals in Kremnica. The collector’s value of the exhibited items is incalculable, some of the estimates mention tens of millions of euros. Coins of all monarchs crowned in Bratislava will be presented in here.
The second part of the exhibition are photographs of the coronation St. Martin Cathedral by the world-famous art photographer Jan William Drnek, who captured the appearance and atmosphere of the cathedral in the publication Metropolitan Cathedrals. You will find the book and enlarged photos from it in the atrium of the bank.
The exhibition mapping the coronation history of the Slovak capital will be open to the public from 20 to 23 October from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Before entering the exhibition, it is necessary to pass the security control and present an identification document.
