Night in the national gallery

In SNG, they have prepared a manifold program for you to enjoy the traditional and popular Long Night of Museums after two years. From afternoon until midnight, they invite children and adults to creative workshops or curatorial lectures. In addition, they will make a tour of the construction of the new SNG for all the eager visitors. You can also look forward to a special surprise right in the Esterházy Palace.

Erik Binder as a live performance artist will come to present his work and the whole thing in the national gallery will end with a night of exceptional video clips with Peter Konečný and DJ set for cool and dancing. Really plenty of art to choose from.

From 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., you can explore the possibilities of your sight and vision together and try to look at yourselves and your surroundings with new eyes. There is no reservation needed for the program for families with children and for individuals, you can stop by any time at the specified time.

Are you looking forward to the opening of a new SNG? At 4 p.m. you can go on an hour-long tour of the SNG building with Dušan Buran, an hour later with Alexandra Kusá, however booking is necessary at kristina.paulenova@sng.sk. You will see the reconstructed SNG area accompanied by a curator’s commentary, where you will be presented with new exhibition spaces, a cinema hall, a depository house, but also unexpected views or places mostly hidden from the eyes of gallery visitors.

The “You can’t buy a butterfly” exhibition presents works of artists of the middle generation of Slovak contemporary art, which enriched the SNG collection in 2021. These include the video installation Pneumatrix, which will be discussed at 6 p.m. by its author Erik Binder together with curator Alexandra Tamásová. The discussion will present the genesis as well as the individual content layers of this complex work.

At the “7×7” exhibition, you can explore several approaches to the optical perception of space in works of art and their specific intentions in the form of short activities. In the studio, you can get closer to one of the oldest imaging aids in a linear perspective, the camera obscura, and capture the image from your own perspective.

Not succumbing to the waving power of disinformation has never been easy. We know that propaganda has brutally distorted our lives in times that many still remember. Today, demagogues and rumours are once again ubiquitous. To engage, encourage collective thinking and convince him of his, however false, story, but they already knew the posters. In the 20th century, totalitarianism made them a perfect servant of its ideological experiments. Curator Viera Kleinová will present an extremely current collection of propaganda, agitation and political posters from socialist Czechoslovakia at 7 p.m., as well as the communist propaganda of the Soviet Union and China. So that you don’t forget…

The 1990s have an exceptional position in the context of Slovak history. They are a decade of turbulent changes that brought not only the fall of the former totalitarian regime, but also the collapse of Czecho-Slovakia, not only the euphoria of the newly acquired freedom after the fall of the Berlin Wall, but also the frustration of the government of Vladimír Mečiar. The art scene was also undergoing a radical change during this period. For this decade, Jana Geržová, editor-in-chief of Profil magazine, will look from the perspective of the critic and curator who was present. Through several model authors and works, it will open a discussion at 8 p.m. not only about what the art of the 1990s was like, but also about what we could or could not do otherwise.

Through short expositions, the SNG will show you 5 selected works from the 7×7 exhibition from 9 to 10 p.m., and you will not buy 5 selected works from the Butterfly exhibition from 10 to 11 p.m. You can stop by anytime at the indicated time.
